I JUST NEED SOMEONE TO TELL ME HOW TALL I AM
Review: Synthesis
By "The Shug"
Produced by that tastemonger of the modern LA roots folk-pop scene, T-Bone Burnett, Road Movies fits right in alongside the Wallflowers, Old 97s and the Gin Blossoms. This is a pleasing and upbeat folk-pop album that is strong on melody, harmony and lyrical word-craft. The voice of lead singer Simon Petty (not the son of Tom Petty) has a melodic prettiness with just a hint of a rough edge. Petty's voice, combined with the roots instrumentation (harmonica, pedal steel, banjo, mandolin, Hammond organ), bring things up several notches. Things go deeper than just pleasant by the time "Six Foot" rolls around, and a closing guitar break hints that there is a rock band behind the singer-songwriter-record producer thing. It's worth checking out for fans of the above-mentioned bands.
